Description:	Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) used to develop console and graphical user interface applications along with Windows Forms applications, ASP.NET applications, web sites, web applications, and web services using native code and managed code. Microsoft Visual Studio supports (to varying degrees) different programming languages, provided a language-specific service exists. Out of the box, the language packs include Visual C++, Visual Basic, and Visual C#. This technology does not contain a database. However, this technology has the capability to import and export data from different types of databases, including Oracle Database and Microsoft Structured Query Language (SQL) Server. Microsoft Visual Studio is available in Community, Express, Professional, Premium, Ultimate, Enterprise, and Test Professional editions. Each of these editions provides the same core functionality. This assessment covers all editions of Microsoft Visual Studio. This entry covers the Desktop Edition of this technology and not any mobile versions. Users must ensure sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. Prior to use of this technology, users should check with their supervisor, Information Security Officer (ISO), Facility Chief Information Officer (CIO), or local Office of Information and Technology (OI&T) representative to ensure that all actions are consistent with current VA policies and procedures prior to implementation.

Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment from Microsoft. It is used to develop computer programs, as well as websites, web apps, web services and mobile apps.

Visual Studio for Mac has many of the same features as Visual Studio and is optimized for developing cross-platform and mobile apps.

How to Get Microsoft Visual Studio

The most basic edition, the Community Edition, is available free of charge from Microsoft.

Students and Faculty may be able to download Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise through Azure for Education for instructional and non-commercial research purposes only.

Purchasing a Professional or Enterprise License

Purchase requires a valid UW budget number and authorization from a budget approver.
No Procurement cards or direct sales to individuals are available.
Microsoft Visual Studio license are available through an annual subscription, with the license period running from June 1 through May 31.
UW-IT cannot prorate or refund the cost of the Microsoft Visual Studio license subscription
UW-IT will automatically bill for the Microsoft Visual Studio license in the next license cycle.
