If you frequently download images from the Web or have installed programs that upload images to your computer, you may wind up with thousands of pictures scattered across hundreds of folders, which can detract from system performance without having any real benefit to your work. If you would like to remove pictures from your hard drive, you can do that after learning how to find them using Windows search.

Find Picture Files

   Click the Windows Start button and then click “Computer" to launch Windows Explorer.

   Click inside the Windows Explore search box and type the following command:

   kind:picture

   This is a search filter that tells Windows to find all pictures on your computer.

   Allow Windows to search for image files; this may take some time as Windows hunts down all of the files. Wait until the green progress bar that moves at the top of Windows Explorer during the search disappears. Windows Explorer displays the search results in a table that has columns with headings. The Name column, for example, contains the file's name. Date Modified, Type, Size and Folder may also appear depending on how you or someone else set up the column headings in Windows Explorer. If you see that list of four columns, proceed to the next section. Otherwise, continue to the next step in this step.

   Right-click the "Name" column header to view a drop-down menu that displays available column headings. Find a column that is missing from the list of four columns described in the previous step. For instance, if you do not see the Type column, find "Type” in the drop-down menu and double-click it. The drop-down menu closes and Windows Explorer adds the column to the table. Repeat this process to add the other columns to the table so that displays the Name, Date Modified, Type, Size and Folder columns.

Delete Pictures

   Decide how you wish to find picture files to delete. If you would like to find picture files that consume the most hard drive space, click the “Size” column header to sort the files by size. On the other hand, if you would like to delete image files that have a specific file type, click the “Type” column header to group them by file type.

   Scroll through the list of picture files, right-click one you would like to delete and click “Delete.” When a dialog box asks if you want to move the file to the Recycle Bin, click “Yes” to move the file to the Recycle Bin.

   Move to Window Explorer's top-right corner and click the “Show the Preview Pane” button. This button toggles the Preview pane on and off. You will find this pane useful because it allows you to preview pictures without opening an image viewer program.

   Click a picture in the search results list you might want to delete to view it in the Preview pane. If you decide to delete it, do so using the steps described previously. Continue previewing and deleting pictures files as needed.
