For her punishment, Ta-hwan ordered Lady Ki to repent and beg for forgiveness which made Golta look pleased.

Lady Ki was on her way to the throne hall when Taltal met her.  He didn’t want her to take the blame for the Chancellor’s death when he was the one who actually killed his uncle.

Taltal showed a record book to Lady Ki which he found in his uncle’s belongings.  It listed all the clans of Han that the Chancellor wanted to terminate.  It was the primary reason why Taltal decided to kill his own uncle.  Taltal told Lady Ki to show the book to the Emperor.  However, Lady Ki knew that the Emperor would not believe her and just accuse her of fabricating a document.

Lady Ki feared that Taltal would be punished severely for what he did and decided to take the blame.  She did not want Taltal to get hurt, believing that he can do a lot more for the Emperor.

On the verge of breaking down, Taltal wiped away a tear as he tried to convince Lady Ki to change her mind but the Lady was stubborn.  She told him not to worry since she would deal with the matter on her own.

Lady Ki was not alone as she stood in front of the hall with the other consorts and servants.  Ta-hwan was not amused and asked if it was Lady Ki’s idea of doing penance.

Lady Ki insisted that she had not done anything wrong and have nothing to repent. Ta-hwan warned her that he might not be able to forgive her this time.

He dismissed Lady Ki’s supporters and left Lady Ki standing alone.

As Ta-hwan waited inside the throne hall for Lady Ki to ask for forgiveness, Golta added flame to the fire and told Ta-hwan that Lady Ki would probably never repent.

Realizing that Golta was right,  he went back to where Lady Ki was and gave his command.  At dawn, Lady Ki and her staff would leave the palace.  She would retire to the temple and receive 100 lashes a day.  If she still refused to repent, Lady Ki may never return to the palace, not even after death.

Lady Ki cried as she watched Ta-hwan walk away.

Ta-hwan went back to his chamber, telling himself in between tears that he would not bend this time.

Taltal, on the other hand, silently stood in the shadows and continued to watch over Lady Ki.

Golta was glad that Lady Ki would soon be kicked out of the palace.  With her gone, the Emperor would have no one beside him. Golta believed that even though the Emperor was the ruler of the country, the country actually belonged to the Emperor’s owner.

Guksu reported to Golta that something weird was going on in the market.  All the grain and holdings of the Eagle House traders were being liquidated, causing the price of grain to go down. Golta found it odd since the shortage in the supply of grain due to the famine should keep the price of grain rising.  He ordered Guksu to monitor the price of grain and buy when the time is right.

Eunuch Bang confirmed to Wang Yu that the Eagle House traders had turned their assets into vouchers as instructed.  The price of grain had started to fall since the officials who hoarded them started to sell in panic.  Jeombakyi finds it odd though that even if there was an over supply of grain and the price went down, the poor still can’t afford to buy a sack of rice that was currently selling for two and a half vouchers.

Eunuch Bang wanted to know if they should start buying but Wang Yu wanted to wait until the price went down some more. Jeokho arrived to report that Lady Ki  was being sent to the temple.

Ta-hwan started the daygetting drunk and refused to see Lady Ki who wanted to pay her respects before leaving for the temple. Golta went out to inform Lady Ki that the Emperor did not wish to see her. Lady Ki was concerned about the Emperor’s health and asked if he had started drinking again. Golta lied about Ta-hwan, saying that the Emperor wasn’t drinking and promised to take care of the Emperor.

The Empress Dowager made a trip to witness the downfall of the so-called mighty Lady Ki.  She mocked Lady Ki since all her efforts only came to nothing.  Lady Ki advised the Empress Dowager to take care of her ward and to stop using the Emperor for her ambition.  Not to be outdone, the Empress Dowager wished Lady Ki good luck since she may be given the same option as the late Empress Bayan — death by poison.

In his drunken stupor, Ta-hwan entered the throne hall dragging his sword.  Using his sword, he started to identify the officials loyal to Lady Ki and to the Chancellor.  When he reached Taltal, he remarked that his case was different since he was half the Chancellor’s man and half Lady Ki’s.  He corrected himself and said that since Taltal was an Uncle-slayer, he was Lady Ki’s man.

Now that the Chancellor was dead and Lady Ki’s gone, he wondered whom they would swore their allegiance to.  He gave them a chance and ordered those who were willing to die for him to grovel on the floor or be killed with his sword.

All of them except Taltal knelt before Ta-hwan.  When Ta-hwan asked why he did not grovel, Taltal replied that he can bow if it was really necessary to show loyalty.  But looking at the Emperor’s current state, he refused to swear allegiance.

Ta-hwan knew that only Taltal was brave enough to tell the truth while the rest of the officials were cowards.  They were cronies of the Chancellor and Lady Ki, whose loyalties changed as soon as they were gone.

He wanted to kill all of them but the Dowager stopped him.  Ta-hwan ordered her to grovel as well since she was his subject too. Furious, the Empress Dowager instructed Golta to escort the drunk Emperor out of the throne hall immediately.

Lord Zhang expressed his concern over Ta-hwan’s mood since Lady Ki had left, but the Empress Dowager thought it was a good opportunity for her to get rid of Ayu from the Crown Prince’s seat and choose a new heir.

Golta tucked the sleeping Ta-hwan in bed and held his hand.  The day that he had waited to happen finally came. Now, whatever belongs to the Emperor would be his.  After all, had he not served Ta-hwan for a long time?

At the temple, Lady Ki woke up from a nightmare about Ta-hwan.  It seemed so real that it made her kneel and pray for Ta-hwan’s safety.

As soon as Ta-hwan woke up the following day,  Golta served him with drug-laced tea.  Golta tried to send Taltal away when his arrival was announced, but the Emperor gave Taltal permission to enter his chamber.

Taltal showed Ta-hwan several documents recording the Chancellor’s plans, including eliminating the five clans of Han and proof of the Chancellor’s dealings with the Eagle House in exchange for suppressing the foreign traders. Taltal reported that the Eagle House was a virtual monopoly that sucked their people dry.  Hence, Eagle House must be eliminated from the roots.  Golta fumed in silence as he heard Taltal’s plea for Ta-hwan to deal with the Eagle House.

Ta-hwan ordered Taltal to deal with the issue at hand but Taltal politely declined.  He was resigning from his post since he felt guilty for killing his own uncle and planned to retire into a life of study and contemplation. Ta-hwan sighed at the thought that Taltal was also leaving him behind.  Taltal took the opportunity to suggest that Ta-hwan should bring back Lady Ki . If it was true loyalty that he wanted, he should place Lady Ki by his side.

At the temple, Lady Ki received her punishment as she knelt in front of the Buddha. Ta-hwan watched from afar while Golta fed him with lies.  He told Ta-hwan that Lady Ki continued to be stubborn and never repented.  Worse, the Lady blamed the Emperor for everything.  Golta suggested for Ta-hwan not consider Taltal’s absurd advise.

Wang Yu’s men including the merchant traders who were branded during the Chancellor’s reign worked diligently to produce counterfeit vouchers.

Eunuch Bang reported to Wang Yu that their production of counterfeit vouchers was on schedule.  The price of grain was now 1/3 cheaper from the time the Yuan officials started selling them.  Wang Yu instructed his men to buy everything that hits the market using their counterfeit vouchers. Eunuch Bang wondered  if Wang Yu was doing it for Lady Ki’s sake but Wang Yu only said that they had to act before the real Eagle Group leader found out about their plan.

The Eagle House’s leader was furious when he learned that his traders sold all their grain as ordered by a fake leader.  He told his traders to buy the grains back immediately.

They were too late though.  Yom Byongsu and Jo-cham learned that merchants with brands on their faces had just bought all the grains. Yom Byongsu found it odd that those merchants still had money.

Taltal was still around and thought that the merchants/foreign traders had someone behind them.  He suspected that Wang Yu was in the Capital.  He ordered his men to search everywhere and find Wang Yu.

Meanwhile, Tangqishi met with the new Commander of the Palace guards who used to be his underling.  Tangqishi gave the commander a chest full of gold as payment for placing Tangqishi’s men in the palace as guards.

Golta was outraged that someone disguised himself as the group’s leader and planned to kill the person who dared to impersonate him.

Ta-hwan was feeling melancholy and called for Golta.  He poured his heart out, feeling empty inside even if he ruled the world. He even hated the sound of people calling him ‘Your Majesty’. Golta offered to serve some drinks but Ta-hwan wanted to go out for a walk.

Ta-hwan walked around the palace ground and was reminded of the memories he shared with Sungnyang:  the laundry area where he  went to find her, the garden where he tried to cheer her up, and the small bridge where she consoled him.

Ta-hwan ended up sitting alone on the bridge, more resentful of Lady Ki.  He stood up and made a decision to visit Lady Ki at the temple.  He had enough and it was time for him to teach Lady Ki a lesson.

However, when he reached the temple, he heard Lady Ki praying for him and their son Ayu as she was being lashed with a bamboo stick.   Taken aback, Ta-hwan wanted to rush towards Lady Ki but Eunuch Dok-man prevented him from doing so since it was not appropriate to interrupt someone’s prayers. 

Lady Ki went back to her room and was too tired to realize that it was Ta-hwan who entered her room instead of Hong-dan.

Ta-hwan gently placed some medication on Lady Ki’s bruised shoulder.  It was only then that Lady Ki realized that it was Ta-hwan who was treating her.  He told her to stay still and hugged her, telling her to return to the palace.  Lady Ki wanted to stay longer at the temple since she had not finished her prayers for both him and their son.

Ta-hwan hugged her tighter and told  her to never disobey him again because it could be the last time that he can forgive her.

Lady Ki returned to the palace and was greeted by the other consorts.  Prince Ayu ran into her arms crying.  He told her never to leave him again since it made him cry every night.  Lady Ki hugged him tightly and promised that she would never make the young prince cry again.

The Empress Dowager who was watching from afar never thought that Lady Ki would make her comeback so soon.  Lord Zhang assured her that there was no need to worry since all of Lady Ki’s supporters had already been removed from office. The Empress Dowager was confident that the next time Lady Ki would be sent out of the palace, it would be as a corpse.

Meanwhile, Eunuch Bang reported to Wang Yu that they were able to fill up 99 warehouses in each province with grain. Wang Yu decided that it was time to spread the counterfeit vouchers/money throughout the country with the help of the merchants.  

He also instructed them to spread the rumour about the existence of counterfeit vouchers.  Jeombakyi arrived to report that Taltal wanted to meet with Wang Yu.

Back at the palace, Lady Ki turned over several documents including the Imperial Treasury ledger which was nearly empty, information on the military’s current state, and the Eagle House. 

The report that Lady Ki had gathered showed that funds intended for famine relief were siphoned off by the Eagle House. Lady Ki suggested that they capture the Eagle House merchant group and confiscate their wealth in order to fill up the Imperial Treasury and help their people.

Ta-hwan was curious and wanted to know why Lady ki was suddenly turning-over the documents to him.  Lady Ki explained that she fought the Chancellor to protect herself and Ayu.  Now that the Chancellor was gone, she no longer needed power.  It was time for her to stand by the Emperor’s side and support  him while raising Prince Ayu.

Ta-hwan now looked at Lady Ki in a different light.  He apologized for his failure in seeing her true intention.  Lady Ki took the chance to ask something from him: she hoped that he would take care of his health and stop drinking for good for her sake and for their son. Ta-hwan readily agreed.  He was in such a good mood that he granted Lady Ki’s other request.

Golta tried to assess all the information that he had just heard and came up with one conclusion.  He would have to kill Lady Ki himself.

Guksu arrived with another bad news.  There was a sudden influx of counterfeit vouchers in the market.  Golta was furious when he learned that their traders who just sold all their assets received worthless vouchers.  It made  him more determined to find the ‘fake’ Eagle House leader.

Lady Ki visited Taltal who spent his time painting and being a true scholar.  She decided to meet with Taltal personally since he sent Eunuch Park away three times. 

Lady Ki relayed the good news to Taltal.  The Emperor had just approved his appointment as the new Chancellor.   Taltal politely declined the offer and thought that it was not his place.  Lady Ki firmly believed that the position was meant for a man like Taltal and asked him to reconsider.

She was about to leave when Taltal suddenly brought up the topic about counterfeit vouchers circulating around the country.

As soon as Lady Ki returned to the palace, she met with the Emperor to inform him about the forgeries.  Her suggestion (which probably came from Taltal) was for them to immediately implement a currency reform.

Vouchers were to be issued directly from the government.  This would eliminate all the counterfeit vouchers currently circulating in the market.  

Ta-hwan feared that the royals and nobles would be incensed, but Lady Ki assured him that his subjects would welcome the change.  The wealthy had monopolized the country’s vouchers for a long time.  Lady Ki reminded the Emperor that his power did not come from the nobles but from his subjects.  It was about time to abandon the wealthy for the commoners.  

Ta-hwan smiled at the way Lady Ki fervently defended her proposal and wrote a new decree.

A decree which was read by the new Chancellor…. Taltal!

“They have been  unable to stem the tide of counterfeits so far.  All existing vouchers will be destroyed and henceforth the country would be using silver as its currency.  Existing vouchers can be exchanged at approved locations.  The decree aims to end the problem with vouchers and help the people.”

Golta almost fainted when he heard the bad news if not for Guksu who was standing behind him.

The Emperor had another announcement to make:  Lady Ki was to be the Empress of Yuan!

The Empress Dowager was shocked at this announcement and literally screamed at her son.  However, Ta-hwan simply reminded her that even as his guardian, her approval was irrelevant.

Ta-hwan smiled fondly at Lady Ki who just stared at him, totally surprised.  Lady Ki accepted her new appointment as the mother of their nation.  Taltal and everyone rejoiced except for a few baddies, of course, like Golta and the Empress Dowager.

Eunuch Bang gladly announced that the currency exchange had left the Eagle House traders penniless.  Wang Yu’s men cheered at the success of their plan.  

Wang Yu quietly listened at their merriment before announcing that he would send all the grain they had gathered to the palace.  His underlings were surprised to hear their next plan but gladly obliged.

Eunuch Dok-man smiled from ear-to-ear as he led the wagons full of grain into the palace.  The Emperor wondered who sent the grain but it was delivered anonymously.  The letter that came along with the delivery only requested the Emperor to use the grain to feed the people.

Lady Ki later asked Taltal about the person who sent them but Taltal only promised to tell her everything in due time.

Yom Byongsu and Jo-cham were summoned to meet the Eagle House’s leader.  They were surprised when the Eagle House’s leader suddenly took off his mask and revealed Golta.  

Golta informed them that were only two types of people who had seen his face, the dead and the vassals.

As expected, Yom Byongsu and Jo-cham chose to be the vassals and to work for Golta who ordered them to kill the person attacking the Eagle House.

Yuri handed over a letter from Tangqishi to Wang Yu (a.k.a. Eagle House’s fake leader) requesting for a meeting.  In his letter, Tangqishi wanted to let the Eagle House’s leader know that he had a plan on how to get rid of the Emperor and Lady Ki.  

Wang Yu’s men were furious and wanted to kill Tangqishi when they heard about the plan.  However, Wang Yu decided to meet with Tangqishi first to learn more about his plan.

Tangqishi was on his way to meet the leader when he ran into Court Lady Seo, who waited patiently for him at the same spot for days.  She was there to tell him a terrible truth, Maha is Lady Ki and Wang Yu’s son.  She requested Tangqishi to tell the Emperor. It was the least that she can do for the late Empress Tanashiri.

Tangqishi was surprised to learn about this and swore that he would kill Lady Ki with his own hands.

Later that night, Tangqishi met with the Eagle House’s Leader.  However, he demanded to see the face of their leader to make sure that he or she was not on Lady Ki’s side.  

The leader removed his mask…and it turned out to be just another man.  Awesome Wang Yu had the foresight not to act as the Eagle House’s leader.  Instead, he stood behind Tangqishi and posed as one of its members.

Satisfied, Tangqishi told them about his plan.  He would install a new Emperor on the throne, Ta-hwan’s second cousin — Bolad Temur.  According to Tangqishi, Bolad would be a perfect candidate for a puppet since he only cared about women and his vanity.

 Tangqishi wanted  the leader to support Bolad and the Empress Dowager while he killed the Emperor, Lady Ki and Crown Prince Ayu.  He was confident on the success of his scheme that bragged about being able to plant his own men as imperial guards.

The Emperor and Lady Ki made a trip outside the palace to watch as the grain was being distributed to the citizen.  Ta-hwan felt happy to see his people’s smiling faces. 

Lady Ki told him that the most secure treasury in the world was his people’s heart. The people started to praise their Emperor for his generosity while Tangqishi watched from afar.

The Emperor’s entourage headed back to the palace when two men suddenly appeared and blocked their path.

It was Tangqishi.  Ta-hwan immediately ordered his guards to kill him but the guards attacked the eunuchs instead. Tangqishi was confident that he would be able to conclude his fight with Lady Ki but Wang Yu appeared together with a group of masked men.

They defeated the imperial guards which Tangqishi did not expect.  Lady Ki decided to fight back and shot an arrow right at Tangqishi’s heart.  Not contented, she fired another arrow but Tangqishi managed to use one of the masked men as a shield.  He got closer to Lady Ki and was ready to kill her but Wang Yu fought him off.  

Lady Ki managed to shoot two more arrows before Wang Yu made a finishing strike on his back. 

She realized that the masked man was Wang Yu but he ran after the guards who tried to escape.

They were about to leave the place when Ta-hwan decided to check on the bloodied Tangqishi.   Ta-hwan was startled when Tangqishi suddenly grabbed him by his collar and told him Maha’s birth secret while choking on his own blood…  “Maha’s real parents were Lady Ki and Wang Yu.  Ask Court Lady Seo if you don’t believe.”

Even in his dying moment, Tangqishi mocked Ta-hwan and called him ‘pathetic’ for being Lady Ki’s second choice.  Ta-hwan was furious and refused to accept what he just heard.  He shook Tangqishi’s body and tried to force him to take back what he just said. 

His face splattered with blood, Ta-hwan looked at Lady Ki’s worried face and at the masked man who stood behind her.
