KOMPAS.TV - Secara astronomis, Indonesia terletak di posisi 96° BT hingga 141° BT. Akibatnya, wilayah Indonesia terbagi menjadi tiga zona waktu yaitu WIB (Waktu Indonesia Barat), WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah), dan WIT (Waktu Indonesia Timur).
Pembagian waktu ini diatur dalam Keputusan Presiden Republik Indonesia Nomor 41 Tahun 1987, tentang Pembagian Wilayah Republik Indonesia menjadi 3 Wilayah Waktu.
Perbedaan waktu antara WIB, WITA dan WIT selisihnya kurang lebih satu hingga dua jam. WIB memiliki selisih waktu satu jam dengan WITA, dan selisih dua jam dengan WIT.
Misalkan di Jakarta menunjukkan pukul 12:00 WIB, maka di Bali pukul 13:00 WITA, dan di Maluku pukul 14:00 WIT.
1. WIB (Waktu Indonesia Barat)
Daerah yang termasuk WIB terletak di sepanjang garis bujur 105 derajat BT. Pembagian waktu ini sama dengan zona waktu internasional UTC +7 atau GMT +7
Wilayah yang masuk dalam zona waktu WIB yaitu seluruh provinsi di Pulau Sumatera, seluruh provinsi di Pulau Jawa, Kalimantan Barat, dan Kalimantan Tengah.
2. WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah)
Daerah yang termasuk WITA terletak di sepanjang garis bujur 120 derajat BT. Pembagian waktu ini sama dengan zona waktu internasional UTC +8 atau GMT +8
Wilayah yang masuk dalam zona waktu WITA yaitu Kalimantan Utara, Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Selatan, Bali, NTB, NTT, dan seluruh provinsi di Pulau Sulawesi.
3. WIT (Waktu Indonesia Timur)
Daerah yang termasuk WIT terletak di sepanjang garis bujur 135 derajat BT. Pembagian waktu ini sama dengan zona waktu internasional UTC +9 atau GMT +9
Wilayah yang masuk dalam zona waktu WIT adalah Maluku, Maluku utara, Papua dan Papua Barat.(*)
