The big Microsoft Office for iPad news is that it's here – today – and that it's completely free to download. But to use the full featureset you'll be required to have an Office 365 subscription which at present costs upto $120 a year, $80 if you're a student or $69.99 on the personal tier.

For free, you'll be able to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint on your iPad to view documents and for delivering presentations. The Office 365 subscription unlocks everything else, giving you access to the full power and featureset of the applications.

Of course, Office 365 doesn't just give you full access to Office for iPad. The Home Premium version for example gives you desktop copies of Office for Mac or Windows for up to 5 different computers, access to the Office web apps, 20GB of SkyDrive and some inclusive Skype calling. Office for iPad is another of the value added propositions to the package.

Microsoft talked a lot about Office 365 and exposing it to developers, as well as each and every different platform. It's hard to look past the need for a subscription, but it looks as though this model plays an important role in Microsoft's future.

Microsoft released an iPhone app for iPhone 365 subscribers, but you don’t need a subscription to use Office on your iOS device. SkyDrive allows you to create and share Office docs.

Last week Microsoft announced the availability of Office on iPhone – sort of. It’s not a typical installation of Word or Excel on your iPhone but actually part of Microsoft’s new Office 365 subscription model. But, you don’t need a subscription to use Office on your iOS device.

Since Microsoft introduced its free Office Web Apps, anyone with a browser and Internet connection can use SkyDrive.com to create and share Office documents. That includes anyone on a PC, Mac, Linux, Android, BlackBerry, and of course, iOS. The benefit of the new Mobile Office app on the iPhone is that it’s optimized for smaller displays. But, if you can get past that and pinch and zoom your documents, using Web Apps via a browser might be enough to get things done on the go.

Office Web Apps on iOS

To start, go to OneDrive.com in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and log in to your Microsoft Account.

Tap create from the top toolbar, and you’ll get a dropdown list to create Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files.

Office Web Apps are based on HTML 5, and you can create new files just like you would with Office on your computer. Web Apps don’t have all of the features available in the desktop versions, but there’s certainly enough to get basic to intermediate work done in documents and spreadsheets.

An Office 365 subscription will cost you $9.99/month or $99/year for the Home Premium version. The Office Mobile app on iPhone includes Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Then there’s a separate app for OneNote on iOS and manage email via Outlook.com.
