Power BI Pie chart is very useful to visualize the high-level data. It is a circular statistical format that represents the size of the item in one data series. The data points on a Pie chart present as a percentage of the whole pie. The total value of the Pie chart is 100%.

There are some rules that we have to consider before creating a Power BI Pie chart. Have a look at the following rules:

  • You have only one data series.
  • The pie chart does not take negative values so all the values must be positive values.
  • All the values must be zero values.

Key elements of a Pie chart

There are mainly 4 key elements present on a Power bi pie chart. These are:

  • Title: The title gives short information about the visual. It can be customized that tells brief information about the chart. It helps the user to identify what they are about to look at.
  • Legend: The legend tells information about each slice that represents on the pie chart.
  • Label: In a pie chart, the data represents as the part of the total i.e, 100%, and each slice of the chart has a different piece of data. It presents as a percentage of the total pie.
  • Data: The data, that we used to create a visual.

Step-1:

Prepare the data, that you used to make visuals. Here we use data based on products sold. You can download it here for your practice

Step-2:

On Power BI Desktop, go to report page. Click Pie chart under visualizations.

In this example, we will create a Pie chart that represents data based on price by product.

  • Values– Price

Basic formating Option of Power BI Pie chart

There is a number of formatting options are available that can be applied on Pie chart to make it more attractive. For formatting, select Pie chart > click on the format.

Let’s discuss above formatting options one by one.

  • General: By expanding this, you can see the options like X position, Y position, Height, Width, etc. You can set the position of visual by using these options.
  • Legend: Here we can hide or show the legends(the items or slices of the pie chart) by using the On/Off toggle. Expand this option to get more options like a position option having a drop-down list, we can reset the position of the legends. A title option is used to show or hide the title of the legends and also we can edit the Legend name. We can change the color and font family and text size of the legend.

  • Data colors: On this, we can customize the data colors for each of the data or slices according to our requirements. For example, on the above Pie chart, we will change the smartphone’s slice from orange color to yellow color. The chart will be visualized like this:

  • Title: Here also we can hide or show the title of the visual using a toggle(on/off). We can edit the title using Title text. The word-wrap allows you to wrap the long text and shows it on the next line of the visual. It also allows changing the font color, background color, font size, and alignment of the title. For example, let’s customize the Title by applying alignment, font size, font color. You can spot the differences:

  • Background: In this option, we can change the background color and set the transparency.
  • Lock aspect: It is used to lock the proportion of an element. If we resize, it will remain in the same proportion as its lock aspect is on. You can reset the default visual by clicking the revert to default option.
  • Border: It is used to add a border to the visual by enabling the toggle. Also, we can change the color of the border and its radius.
  • Shadow: Similarly, it is used to give a shadow or highlighting the visual. We can choose the shadow color and its position.
  • Visual header: It is used to show the visual title in a new way, using various options present inside it.

In Power BI, there is a cool feature, when the user mouse over on the different segment of visuals it’s showing a tooltip with the static details. For example: if we mouse over on the laptop segment, the tooltip shows the product’s name with its total sell price.

  • Details label: There is a toggle option, we can show or hide the label of the slice. Also, you can set the label style to a data value, categories, percent of the total, etc. Also, we can change the color of each slice on Pie chart.

Now we will discuss, power bi pie chart filter and how highlighting works on the Power BI Pie chart. There is a filter pane, on that, we can apply filter and make a highlight on the visual. Let’s follow the step-by-step guide to applying a filter on the pie chart.

Step-1:

Select the Pie chart visual.

Step-2:

In filter pane, you can see the option like Filters on this visual(it is only applicable on the selected visual).

Lets filtrate a visual that shows the item whose price is less than 18000 and less than equal to 15000. Then the visual look like below:

In this above filter Pie chart, it will show the product price that comes between 18000-15000.

There are two conditional operators, i.e. And, Or. And operator is used, where both conditions must be true between two arguments.

Similarly, Or operator is used where one condition is true between two arguments.

Let’s take another example, where we apply filter on products. By expanding the filter type, we can see 3 different types of filtering like Advance filtering, Basic filtering, Top N filtering.

  • Advance filtering: In this filter, visual will appear according to our condition. for example, We will apply a condition, that shows the visual which contains Desktop Or Starts with R. After applying the condition click on an apply filter to show result. It will be present like below:

On the above filter, it showing only Desktop as there is no product that starts with R. This is how an advance filtering on Power BI Pie chart.

  • Basic filtering: By applying this filter we can filter, visualize, edit, read those products which we want to present on the visual. We can show the multiple values as well as single values on Power BI Pie Chart.

For example, we will show only Laptop, desktop, smartphone from total products list. Lets have a look on below visual:

  • Top N: This filter is using to show the top or bottom N number of items of the total product items. For example, we will build a visual that shows the top 3 items of the total products. Then the result will be like below:

Example 1: Format by Color Scale

Step-1:

As there is no option for conditional formatting on the data color of the Pie chart, we will convert this pie chart to clustered column chart.

Now select the Data colors. Click on function as shown on below:

It will navigate page, on which we will do the conditions on data color for visual.

In this above example, here we set the data colors according to lowest value, middle value, highest value on minimum, center, maximum respectively.

Step-4:

After clicking OK, the data color will change on the clustered column chart. Also, we can see this chart having conditional formatting.

Now convert this column chart to a pie chart by selecting this visual. It applies the color on each product based on its count.

Example 2: Format by Rules

Step-1:

Similarly, choose Rules by expanding Format by(on selecting the function of bar chart’s data color).

Step-2:

How to show percentage value in Power bi?

Now we will show how to show only percentage value in power bi pie chart. Follow this step by step guide to implement this:

Step-1:

For example, we will create a pie chart that shows the data as quantity by products.

Step-2:

Select this visual, go to Format > Details label > Label Style > Percent of total.

Now, We can see the only percentage value visualize on the pie chart.

Let’s see how to do drill up and drill down on the power bi pie chart. In power bi, drill up and drill down on report help you to drill the report in multi-levels.   • Go to the Data/Drill tab, we can see all the properties to make drill up and drill down.
  • If the data has hierarchy or multilevel values then the drill options will show on the top right corner of the visual.
  • We can right-click on the visual to see and use the drill option on the context menu.

For example, lets go to next in the hierarchy. Then the visual will be look like:

On this above visual if you closely notice, the drill-up option is now enabled. which means there is possible to go up. Also, you can notice both the visual, the first one is showing Profit by year and Product category and the second one is showing Profit by Quarter and Product Category.

Step-5:

Similarly, If we click again on going to next in the hierarchy, we will move up to the next level. i.e. Profit by Month and product category. This visual will be shown like this:

If we click on drill up(up arrow), then it will move to the previous level or up level. i.e. Profit by Quarter and Product Category.

To drill down on the Power bi pie chart, select a segment that you want to drill down and click the drill-down button from the context menu.
